AvalonBay Communities, Inc. is a leading publicly traded REIT that develops, redevelops, acquires, owns and operates apartment communities. The Company owns and/or operates approximately 300 apartment communities containing approximately 95,000 apartment homes in eleven states and the District of Columbia, with a substantial concentration in California, the Northeast, and the Mid-Atlantic regions. AvalonBay's business strategy focuses on investing in high-barrier-to-entry markets in locations with favorable supply/demand trends. The Company operates in three reportable segments based on operating geography: the Same Store segment, consisting of stabilized apartment communities; the Other Stabilized Communities segment, which includes older apartment communities that the Company has acquired and stabilized; and the Development/Redevelopment segment, which includes properties under development or redevelopment. The Company generates revenue primarily from apartment rental and other services provided to residents.
