Norfolk Southern Corporation is an Atlanta, Georgia-based company that owns and operates Norfolk Southern Railway Company, a major freight railroad. The company is primarily engaged in the rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods primarily in the Southeast, East, and Midwest regions of the United States, and via interchange with rail carriers, to and from the rest of the U.S. Norfolk Southern also transports overseas freight through several Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports and offers an extensive intermodal network in the eastern half of the U.S. The company operates approximately 19,100 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia. Norfolk Southern's revenue is generated from three primary commodity groups: merchandise (including agriculture/forest products, chemicals, metals/construction, and automotive), intermodal services (containers and trailers), and coal. In 2025, merchandise accounted for 63% of railway operating revenues, intermodal for 25%, and coal for 12%. The company's infrastructure is capital intensive with approximately $36 billion in net properties on a historical cost basis.
