Company Overview

CarMax, Inc. operates as the nation's largest retailer of used vehicles, delivering an unrivaled customer experience by offering a broad selection of quality used vehicles and related products and services at competitive, no-haggle prices using a customer-friendly sales process. The company operates 256 used car stores across 110 U.S. television markets and sells vehicles through both retail and wholesale channels. CarMax sold 780,684 used vehicles at retail during fiscal 2026 and manages an auto loan portfolio of approximately $16.37 billion, servicing approximately 1.0 million customer accounts. The company operates through two reportable segments: CarMax Sales Operations, which includes vehicle sales, purchases, related products and services, and financing arrangements; and CarMax Auto Finance (CAF), which provides financing solely to retail customers. CarMax's operations include purchasing vehicles from consumers and dealers through appraisal processes, reconditioning vehicles to meet quality standards backed by a 10-day money-back guarantee and 30-day limited warranty, conducting wholesale vehicle auctions with approximately 99% average sales rate, and providing extended protection plans and vehicle repair services. The company offers omnichannel capabilities enabling customers to buy vehicles online, in-store, or through seamless combination of both, leveraging proprietary information systems, digital capabilities including the AI-powered virtual assistant Skye, and digital appraisal products like MaxOffer. CarMax acquired Edmunds Holding Company in June 2021 to enhance digital capabilities and technology talent.
